We’re honored to share that our groundbreaking research on legal AI has been accepted to the NeurIPS 2024 conference. This marks an important milestone for Equall as we continue our mission to deliver frontier systems for legal work.

About NeurIPS

The Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS) is the preeminent conference for machine learning and artificial intelligence, where researchers gather to share discoveries, exchange ideas, and drive the fields forward. Having our research included in this year’s highly competitive conference program underscores the value of our work at the intersection of AI and law.

Our Research

At Equall, we believe that domain-specific AI can outperform general-purpose systems in specialized fields. To test this, we developed and trained the Saul family of language models, a suite of systems purpose-built for legal reasoning. Saul models, available in three sizes (7B, 54B, and 141B parameters), were designed to address the unique demands of legal work, where precision, nuance, and contextual understanding are paramount.

As discussed in our dedicated post on SaulLM, our methodology is rooted in three components:

  • Continued Pretraining: Extending general AI knowledge with domain-specific expertise.
  • Instruction Fine-Tuning (IFT): Teaching the model to excel in legal reasoning tasks.
  • Preference Alignment with domain-specific optimization (DSO): Ensuring outputs meet the exacting standards of legal professionals.

Applying this methodology, Saul achieved state-of-the-art performance on legal reasoning benchmarks. The results from this work shed light on the advantages of adapting AI systems for legal tasks, and provide a framework for future research on domain-specialized models.

Our Mission

This work is part of Equall’s broader effort to develop specialized AI systems for legal work. By tailoring systems to the intricacies of legal tasks and practice areas, we aim to empower professionals with tools that combine precision, customization, and reliability — and that are capable of truly transforming legal workflows from beginning to end.
